Well, I won't lie, this stamp was inspired by the subject of 'Avatar' fandom comparing all that's blue, has tendrils, flies etc to avatar characters, or simply say they're things that could fit in Avatar world. Avatar was not the first movie with dragons, cat-people, or 6 limbed creatures. Plus apparently many aspects, even the mind binding was ripped off from a 50s sci-fi novel.
To many artists this is NOT a compliment, especially if you have nothing else to say in your comment besides 'oh this looks like...".
There was a case when I was animating at school one of my flying creatures (not even scaly...but with fur) and one person asked me if i was avatar inspired. Everyone knew i wanted to beat the guy with his own spine.
Of course, if I create something and it's similar to something that's already been made, by all means let me know. But other than that, if you feel the need to compare stuff to something, do write a critique, a compliment, or SOMETHING that strikes you personally about the picture before dropping the 'it kinda looks like...' line. It makes the comment much more bearable.
I get sick of having my creature always compared to pokemon even when they look nothing like one. Every one thinks cause I'm a pokemon fan that every thing I make is pokemon related which is why I stopped running pokemon altogether. Pokemon was the the first to make cute anime creatures. I need to learn to be a better artist.
So true. I know an artist that wrote a journal telling people that he doesn't want people to compare his art and OC's character background to Naruto. I don't blame him for it. I know I made characters based off of old myths and legends, but when people compare them to some new show or hit thing, I get upset over it because I'm not basing my character to some stupid show or character from a book.
Unless there is very constructive critique and somehow, the comparison is to help get their point across or make it easier to understand then it's just a flat out insult to me.
I get this all the time from people...they compare my designs with characters I have never even heard of sometimes, and some make no sense. It's a real peeve of mine...so I agree.
I would not feel comfortable if I was compared and luckily my characters have never been compared to any other characters. If my character looks like someone or acts like someone then I've probably already noticed and I don't need a reminder.
I see what you mean. I see things that look like other things, but I know that sometimes it can be coincidence or the artist chooses to make something in a certain style.

"Well, I do..."
