Stumbled upon an interesting thread on Reddit debunking few armor myths and I thought I'd share it with you guys, especially those who draw that sort of thing.

imgur.com/a/3j1jA I do have to say I would love to have a beautiful piece of armor like this one.

Nice one also added by  @teh-dino
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqC_sq…  More myths debunked.

At 35 min mark you can see this particular armor in action.
At 40 it shows nicely how flexible one can be.

Bonus videos of some badass sword-fighting : )

Definitely makes me wanna write some fight scenes now.

If anyone has more tips on making armor realistic, feel free to share : )

And the thread, for those interested  www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments…

I fight in armor, full contact, not SCA.  I might be able to answer some questions.

Hey! That's pretty badass. I would definitely love to ask some questions sometime. I am writing a fantasy novel so being able to get some first hand experience info would be a huge help. Plus I might also forward it to few blogs that do world building articles.

Thanks

I also do unarmored longsword: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=…

If we ever have any events in your area, you could come out and watch too, also we are putting together an amazing women's team.  One of the main issues are: fighting in war is nothing like dueling, helmets constrict breathing and vision,  and the man you don't see is usually the one that will kill you.

If you're ever in tiny town in UK sure :P The closest thing I ever saw to sword fight was on medieval fairs, which i miss a lot. Also love that last sentence, as cool as movie fights are, they could sometimes use more realism.

not going to pretend to have extensive knowledge, just some basic resources. i happen to love knights, these things are pretty easy to find but might help in some way. or at least save time.

Different Types of Helmets
Youtube video that conveniently happens to show how the Armet works. i'm a visual person so the diagrams on wiki didn't help. the Armet is the predecessor to the Closed Helm which is more common for people to draw. it's relevant imo because while the double-visor Closed is cool, lots of people don't draw anything but that. (that and the "Great Helm". :O_o:)

similar to above but with a gloriously fancy cape.
plate armour. plate armour. these both follow the same composition mostly but look pretty distinct. sometimes people draw every suit all the same with exact same shapes and colours. engravings, heraldry, and colours are also part of what would make a knight unique.

Counter-Camoflauge. to contrast all that grey/silver/black, though that might be preferable to eye-watering yellows and stuff. it's super-common on earlier knights with their pajama suits surcoats and all.

Henry VIII's interesting plate armour.

that's all i got, i think.

Maybe not so much for drawing armor, but for a reference on what you can actually do while in armor, I really like How to Mount a Horse in Armor and Other Chivalric Problems, a lecture that was done by a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's long but I highly recommend it.
(How do you mount a horse while in armor? Pretty much the same way you do without armor!)
