I don't think I ever shared this link, but anyone who wants to write (mainly fantasy) should really check out Brandon Sanderson's lectures. I have learned a lot of new and useful things, and it prevented me from making mistakes I was about to make. The classes cover everything from character development, to world building, constructing your writing and publishing.

Here are the other lectures  www.youtube.com/user/WriteAbou…

I think I've seen this guy's stuff before... I know I've heard a lot of similar before. Trying to write what I like to read helps, too, I'd say!

Wow, thanks for sharing this. I took a couple of related classes during college just to get a better grasp on how to do my own stories, organization stuff. I don't think I'm a good writer but I can't wait to start watching this..and actually take notes xD

Sanderson actually has a regular writing podcast called Writing Excuses that I highly recommend.  It's only 15 minutes per episode, and each episode covers a different writing topic.  Recent episodes include a discussion of publishing with Tom Doherty, the founder of Tor Books, and how to write "rogueish" characters.

It actually won the Hugo this year for "Best Related Work."  He does it with three other people: webcartoonist Howard Tayler (Sluggy Freelance), horror author Dan Wells, and fantasy author Mary Robinette Kowal, so it gets perspective from all over the genre fiction landscape.
